Le mémorial de Martin Luther King à Washington a été inauguré par Barak Obama. Voici un court texte adapté de Time (niveau B1+ au CECRL), qui vous donnera les choix faits par les concepteurs du mémorial. Lire pour le plaisir et faire ensuite l'activité proposée...
King monument is a concept based on a line from King's famous 'I Have a Dream' speech : 'With this faith we will be able to hew out of a mountain of despair a stone of hope'.
There are two masses of white granite in the Memorial. The first one represents the Mountain of Despair : two masses of granite that face one another across a divide. Walk across them, you emerge into a plaza. There stands the Stone of Hope. It presents a 9 metre high figure of King, his arms crossed, emerging from the rough granite. Behind it is a 137 metre long wall inscribed with quotations from Martin Luther King
All around the King Memorial are 182 cherry trees that will burst into bloom every April the month King was assassinated – a symbolic rebirth.
Lei Yixing, a Chinese artist, was chosen to sculpt the monumental statue.
